Subject: General Linguistics: Assistant Professor of Fieldwork and Indigenous Languages, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA
University or Organization: The Ohio State University
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Ohio, USA
Web Address: https://www.osu.edu/
Job Title: Assistant Professor of Fieldwork and Indigenous Languages
Job Rank: Assistant Professor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Description:
The Department of Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio
State University seeks to hire an Assistant Professor specializing in
linguistic fieldwork and researching an indigenous language, with a commitment
to engagement with that language’s community of speakers. The position is
partially funded by Ohio State’s Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme, a
significant faculty hiring investment in key thematic areas in which the
university can build on its culture of academic collaboration to make a global
impact.
We welcome applications from specialists on indigenous signed or spoken
languages anywhere in the world. We are particularly interested in applicants
whose research focuses on languages often excluded from social institutions,
associated with racial or ethnic minority communities, and/or subject to
language loss. While we are interested in candidates with the promise of or
expertise in conducting fieldwork and community engagement, we also value
contributions toward development of documentary resources and advancement of
linguistic theory (in any subfield). The department is committed to diversity,
equity, inclusion, and outreach and we especially welcome applications from
under-represented scholars, including members of the linguistic communities
they study.
The prospective hire will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in
fieldwork and other courses in their area(s) of expertise and in the
department’s general education curriculum. They will also supervise graduate
and undergraduate research. As a department, we are committed to a culture of
inclusive pedagogy.
We anticipate that the prospective hire will strengthen the department’s
existing collaborations across units and colleges as well as fostering new
ones (e.g., with the Buckeye Language Network; OSU’s area studies centers and
language and culture departments; the Center for Ethnic Studies; the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the American Indian
Studies program).
We acknowledge the land that The Ohio State University occupies is the
ancestral and contemporary territory of the Shawnee, Potawatomi, Delaware,
Miami, Peoria, Seneca, Wyandotte, Ojibwe, and Cherokee peoples. Specifically,
the university resides on land ceded in the 1795 Treaty of Greeneville and the
forced removal of tribes through the Indian Removal Act of 1830. As a land
grant institution, we want to honor the resiliency of these tribal nations and
recognize the historical contexts that have and continue to affect the
Indigenous peoples of this land.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Linguistics or doctoral degree in a related field is required prior
to the position start date of August 15, 2023. ABDs welcome to apply.
Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and
other information required by law and/or university policies, including but
not limited to a criminal background check.
The Ohio State University is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified
applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race,
color, religion, sex, sexual orientation or identity, national origin,
disability status, or protected veteran status.
Please apply via the link below. A complete application consists of a cover
letter, curriculum vitae, research, teaching and diversity statements, and
three letters of reference. The diversity statement should articulate your
demonstrated commitments and capacities to contribute to diversity, equity,
and inclusion through research, teaching, mentoring, and/or outreach and
engagement. Review of applications will begin on November 15 and will continue
until the position is filled.
