Focus: Language Education for Sustainable Development
Transformative language pedagogy
Description:
In response to global challenges and the growing demand for
future-oriented education, this spring school brings together
researchers and educators to explore the role of language teaching in
advancing sustainability. Aligned with Goal 4 of the UN’s 2030 Agenda,
the program emphasizes how language education can foster
transformative learning and empower learners to engage actively with
sustainable development and develop a sustainability mindset.
Recognizing the value of cross-linguistic communication and
intercultural dialogue, we will examine holistic approaches that move
beyond conventional language instruction, promoting
sustainability-focused innovation and translingual collaboration.
Participants will have the opportunity to investigate how integrating
environmental, social, and cultural dimensions into language curricula
can enrich learning experiences, inspire critical thinking, and
encourage socially responsible action.
Through theoretical, empirical, and practice-based contributions, the
spring school aims to strengthen the integration of sustainability
into language education and to highlight its potential for inclusive,
socially responsible global teaching practices. The program seeks to
equip educators with the tools, strategies, and perspectives needed to
make learners more resilient in the face of global transformations.
