Speakers:
This year’s programme will feature invited sessions by Joyce Lim
(Aston University) and a joint session by Matt Gee and Emma Franklin
(Birmingham City University). It will also include contributions from
members of our local staff of corpus linguistics, including Edward
Clay, Jason Grafmiller, Jack Grieve, Susan Hunston, Sofia Malamatidou,
Akira Murakami, Florent Perek, Adam Schembri, Paul Thompson, Katharine
Weetman, and Bodo Winter, among others.
The annual Sinclair Lecture will also take place during the summer

Kehoe (Birmingham City University). Further details will be announced
in due course.
Programme:
Our Corpus Linguistics Summer School aims to equip participants with
critical expertise in both the theory and practice of corpus-based
linguistic research. Over four days, participants will engage in two
types of sessions. First, hands-on sessions will focus on developing
practical skills for extracting and analysing different types of
corpus data, and applying this knowledge to specific research
projects. Second, participants will learn about current corpus
research from our team.
Topics of sessions will include (this is a non-exhaustive list and
subject to change):
- Analysing healthcare data using corpus linguistics
- Analysing learner language
- Corpora and legal research
- Corpus triangulation
- CQPweb
- Fake news
- Introduction to R and tidyverse
- Language change in online data
- Sign language corpora
- Sketch Engine
- Tagging and parsing with Python and SpaCy
- Topic models
We look forward to welcoming a diverse and international group of
participants for what promises to be an inspiring and practical
learning experience.
