Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Submission Deadline: 30-Jun-2026

ICMC-2026 will take place in a hybrid format at the University of La
Rioja (Logroño, Spain) from November 4 to 6, 2026. It is organized by
members of the research project "Lexical blending and cognitive
modeling: Developing a theory-driven analytical database", funded by
the Spanish State Research Agency and the research group Riojan
Research Group on Semantics, Syntax and Language Use (Grupo Riojano de
Investigación en Semántica, Sintaxis y Uso del Lenguaje, GRISSU) at
the University of La Rioja (Logroño, Spain).
The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars working on
word-formation, constructional approaches, and figurative meaning,
with particular emphasis on how these domains interact in the
construction and interpretation of meaning.
Plenary Speakers:
- Alexandra Bagasheva (Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski")
- Bert Cappelle (University of Lille)
- Elisa Mattiello (University of Pisa)
- Carmen Mellado Blanco (University of Santiago de Compostela)
We invite 20-minute (plus 10-minute discussion) presentation proposals
on the following topics:
 - Lexical semantics and constructional meaning: Interaction between
lexical and constructional meaning, including compositionality and
coercion.
 - Word-formation processes in constructional frames: Derivation,
composition, lexical blending, and other morphological mechanisms
understood as mini-constructions or constructional schemas.
 - Lexical blending and other non-concatenative word-formation
processes: Cognitive, semantic and pragmatic constraints, as well as
issues of creativity, productivity, and predictability.
 - Figurative meaning: The role of metaphor, metonymy, irony, sarcasm,
hyperbole and other figures of thought in the configuration of
lexical, syntagmatic and discursive constructions.
 - Meaning construction in the semantics-pragmatics interface: How
context, speakers’ intentions, inference and pragmatic enrichment
interact with the meaning codified in words and constructions.
 - Discourse, use and emergent meaning: Constructional meaning in
discourse, use-based change, conventionalization of figurative
expressions and the role of discursive patterns in the entrenchment of
meaning.
 - Cognitive models and scenario-based models of constructional
meaning: Frame-based approaches, scenarios and simulations for the
analysis of meaning, including mental spaces, conceptual complexes and
inferential patterns.
 - Knowledge representation and conceptual organization in language:
Frames, schemas, domains, and encyclopedic knowledge as a resource for
lexical interpretation, constructional meaning and figurative
extensions.
 - Methodological approaches to the analysis of meaning: Corpus-based,
experimental, introspective and mixed approaches to the study of the
construction of meaning in the lexical, constructional, and figurative
domains.
 - Cross-linguistic and multilingual perspectives on meaning
construction. Comparison between languages and language families with
special attention to how they interact in word formation,
constructions, and figurative language in different languages.
The conference particularly welcomes contributions grounded in
cognitively oriented and usage-based approaches to language.
