Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Submission Deadline: 15-Jan-2027

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 1st International
Conference on Dialectal Variation in the Peloponnese, organized by the
Departments of Language Studies UTM/UTSC, University of Toronto.
This will be the first conference devoted exclusively to (Modern
Greek) dialectal variation in the Peloponnese, a region of Greece
whose linguistic landscape remains severely under-researched. The
conference is long overdue and much required in light of (a) the
extensive linguistic levelling that has been taking place in the
Peloponnese for decades and (b) the emerging reorientation or
reshaping of the field, following Pantelidis’s (2001, 2007, 2015)
challenge to the long-prevailing view that the Peloponnesian and
Ionian varieties formed the basis for the development of Modern Greek
Koine (Browning 1969; Newton 1974; Babiniotis 1979, among others).
The conference welcomes papers on all Peloponnesian varieties, as well
as on the varieties of the Peloponnese. The former refers to dialectal
varieties that share formal characteristics and form a homogeneous
dialectal group, whereas the latter primarily includes Maniot and
Tsakonian, which do not share the same characteristics as the
remaining Peloponnesian varieties (see Liosis 2020).

Greece - Chair of the Linguistics Committee of the Academia Europaea
