For me as a native speaker of Dutch it is fascinating how a letter
I always considered to be quite ordinary can evoke such different
reactions.  I remember on my first visit to Denmark with my parents
(long, long ago) how my father stressed to us we should pronounce
the 'v' in Vejle as a 'w', and at the time I had a hard time under-
standing how the Danes could be so confused.

On the same subject, is the 'v' in Dutch unique, or does this pron-
unciation exist in other languages as well?  What about Afrikaans?
