Dag Ron en almal,

Die enigste 'mank' wat in Afrikaans nog bestaan, beteken lam;
fisies gebrekkig (soos in 'handicapped'). Die woord 'mankoliek'
hou ook hiermee verband.

Ek dink die oerbetekenis van 'mank' was: 'deel van'/ 'gestut'/ gebuffer
teen'.
Namate die oermens wyer betekenisse rondom die begrip ontwikkel het,
het vorme soos meng / mengsel / mengelmoes / vermenging bygekom.

Ander Afrikaanse analogieë waar umlaut betrokke is:
lank - lengte - verlenging
dak - deksel - bedekking
kap - keep - inkeping

Dear Lowlanders,
Regarding "among", meaning 'in the crowd', I find that the
PGmc abstract noun *manag-i:n yielded OE 'menigu', OFris. 'menie', and OS
'menigi:' NHG 'Menge").

This is based on the PGmc adjective stem *maniga-,
meaning 'many', which itself gave OE 'manig', OFris 'monich', OS 'manag'
(NHG mancher).

I got that from Bammesberger's book on the Germanic noun.

I was dubious about 'mingle' being related, but I found that it is so.  ME
'menglen', 'to mingle', is the frequentative of OE 'mengan', 'to mix'.
This is a nasal infix present, apparently.  It is derived, according to
Pokorny, to PIE verbal root *mag-, 'knead, fashion, fit'.  This root also
gives us English 'make', from OE 'macian'.

Ek glo, dit "mank" het met hierdie woordgroep niks te doen nie, maar dat dit
met Nederlands _manco_ en Duits _Manko_ verwant is, wat waarskynklik van
(bank-)Italiaans _manco_ 'kastekort, deficit, tekort, gebrek' afkom (Engels
_deficit_, _deficiency_, _handicap_).  En dit Italiaanse woord is
waarskynlik met Duits _Mangel_ 'tekort' (ook die Engels bedoeling _lack_)
verwant.

Hi, Allison!  Thanks a lot for adding the info (above).  "To make" figuring
into this came as a surprise to me, but now that you said it, it kind of
makes sense, certainly the relationship with "many."
