Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2006.04.01 (03) [D/E/LS]
Dear all,
About 'nuver'; this is one of those words that you come across when you go
to theaters. There was a play in the Netherlands, with the name 'Suver
nuver'. It could denote something as 'neophobia', because if we apply the
soundlaws to this word and transpose it into Dutch we would end up with
words like *nuiver, with loss of suffix *nuif, and without vowel lengthening
*nuf, *nuffig, etc..
There is a word in Dutch _nuf_ which is a girl who pretends to be prudish.
Hence _nuffig_ = 'as a 'nuf''.
Best regards,
Marcel.
