Beste Reineke,
in Diin inter'sante 'Slavonic Connections' schrivvst Du:
*Dannenberg*
Polab.: Weidars, Woikam; translit. *Weidars, Woikam*
etym. clue:* **waika* < *wika* (town) < Mid. Sax. *wîk*
Mii is dat all fooken opp-full'n, wat 'wik' meersttieds as 'town', ouk woll
'Handelsplatz' öbersett' waard.
No miin Meen' is doch de öllere, oor-sprönglich' Bedüüden 'bight', 'bay',
dicht bii dat düütsche Wourd 'Weiche' (wat in maritime Sprook jümmers noch
'Bucht' is) un skandinaav'sch 'vik'.
Un- de oulen Oorts-Beteyknungen, in dey 'wik' or 'wyk' binnen sitten deyht,
findst alleyn(?) in Tohoup-Hang mit Steden an 'Water' un 'Hoben'.
Kloor- eyn Hoben leyg fooken an eyn natöörlik' 'Bucht', de Scheep un Hoben
schulen dey.

oeversetten.
Folks, under "Slavonic connections" I listed sound shift from common
Slavonic to Polabian, amongst them the following:
> - unstressed "a", "u", "o" > "ü"
I believe I followed Polański and Sehnert there, but I now realize that this
cannot be correct. One of the reasons is that ü occurs in one-syllable
words even when they are stressed, such as müg 'can' and Büg 'God' (in other
languages mog and Bog respectively). Something more complex is going on
here, probably something that is not germane to our topic area, unless it
turns out to be relevant to the topic of Low Saxon loans in Polabian at
which I will take a closer look at a later point in time.
By the way, you may have noticed that Draveno-Polabian underwent
diphthongization along the lines of German, Standard Dutch and English:
u > åu
i > ai
What is interesting about this is that Low Saxon, which surrounded Polabian,
did not participate in these shift. (Scots, Western Flemish and various
Dutch dialects didn't either, but that's a different matter.)
Below is my transliteration of the Polabian Lord's Prayer, Low Saxon loans
being highlighted:
Ajta nås, tå toi jis wå nebesai,
sjętü wordoj tüji jaimą;
tüji rik komaj;
tüja wüľa mo są ťüńot kok wå nebesai tok no zemi;
nosę wisedanesnę sťaibę doj nam dåns;
a wütådoj nam nose greche,
kok moi wütådojeme nosim gresnarem;
ni bringoj nos wå warsükongę;
toi losoj nos wüt wisokag chåudag.
Pritü tüje ją tü ťenądztwü un müc un cåst, warchni Büzac,
nekąda in nekędisa. Amen.
word- < MS word- 'be(come)'
kom- < MS kom- 'come'
bring- < bring- 'bring'
rik < Riek 'realm', 'kingdom'
un < un 'and'
warsükong < MS varsukung, versükung, etc. 'temptation'
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
