Hi Ron!

Subject: L-Lowlands "Etymology"

You ask what I think.

Well, there's little point in consulting my sources, since all they show is
that you have already covored the ground thoroughly

What tickles me is that despite its obvious etymology Chamber's Etymological
seems to consider it important that the container is tin, both for tea &
munitions, but gives little further input. I sit here with a charming book
on Historical Meteorology (A E Merriman; J M Dent & Sons, 1953). Like the
boy's book report in which he wrote 'It tells one more than one wants to
know about whales', every kind & condition of pre-classical, classical &
post-classical units of every measure conceiveable, canistro or related form
do not feature.

This doesn't say much of course. A basket is by its very nature open to
specification for a host of different burdens & measures large & small.

In a nutshell, your guess is better than mine.

Yrs,
Mark
