Dear All,
I wonder if anyone has any ideas what the muurankers (wall anchors) on The
Torhaus in Ottendorf, Germany spell: 'GHZSEUW'. Is this a variant of
'Jesus'?
There is a parallel, both for placing the name on a building, and somewhat
for the spelling in the town accounts of Zwolle (1455) when a Mr Marten
paid to have the IHUES on the town hall reguilded (this from an excellent
article by DJ de Vries on the use of the IHS monogram in Bulletin KNOB in
2004).
With thanks,
Pat
