Not only modern Hebrew and before the seventies, but in Classical
Hebrew: The ancient city is still called Yaffa.

Yes, of course this and other words based on the root **yf*V for *'beauty'
do occur in pre-contemporary Hebrew as well.
I should have made it clearer and referred to יופי *yofi*, originally
probably 'beauty', as probably being of modern coinage in the specific sense
of 'great!', 'fine!', 'fantastic!', 'great!'
(Cf. Australian "Beauty, mate!" 'Great, man!')
