Dear Elsie & Marcel:
Subject: LL-L "Etymology"
Could this word 'j*o*fel' be related to the English 'jovial' ie jolly,
cheerful, magnanimous, attributes of the Roman god Jove? Afrikaans also has
'joviaal'.
According to Kritzinger, Steyn, Schoonees & Cronje, 'j*a*vel translates into
the English 'lout', 'clodhopper', 'ninconpoop'.
> As in *slim jafel*? Well, why not, I'd say.
> In Dutch we often use the expression: "Het is hier niet al te jofel" or
"Hij is niet jofel", where "niet jofel" means "not okay, not sane/healthy".
> En /and then we also say: "Een jofele vent" = "great guy". Interesting,
how you feel the > understatement when used in a negative sense.
Yrs,
Mark
