Beste Jonny, Ron and Jorge,

Dear Ron,

you wrote about the collection of Marcelo Jolkesky:

I'm not quite sure all this was meant to be serious.

What's up with all those engs (ŋ), anyhow? Is it a decoding problem?

Where did he get the Indo-European data? For instance, where I come from
Indo-European for 'bind' is **bhindh-* (cf. Sanskrit भन्ध- *bhandh-* and
भिन्ध- *bhindh*).

Exactly these were my own thoughts when I looked into the collection!

Whether those German words are part of a Uralic substrate or rather cognates
within a broader, more distant Indo-Uralic context is probably better
explained by Frederik Kortlandt, a professor at the Dutch Leiden university.
You can find him here: http://www.kortlandt.nl/
Especially document 203e (found under "Other electronic publications") is
worth the read.

Jolkesky himself graduated at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in
Brazil, according to Wikipedia one of the best Latin-American universities
for research. His dissertation was supervised by Markus Weininger and Werner
Heidermann.

There may not yet be complete consensus on this topic among professionals,
but as far as I can judge, none of this classifies as bogus.

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx
