Ek het ân vraag vir jou. Hoeveel letters (nie nodiglik 26 nie) sal jy nodighe
om die fonologie van meeste laaglandse tale naastenby te weergee, UITGESLUIT
diakritiese simbole. Na my mening sal Afrikaans 30 nodig he.

Ons moet na die nommer van foneme in elke taal kyk. Teoreties behoort dit
ook die nommer van nodig letters te wees.
Maar sommige foneme het alreeds dubbelletters, in Afrikaans *oe* vir [u], *
eu* vir [øË]. *gh* vir [g], *ch *vir [x], *sj *vir [Ê] , *dj* vir [ʤ],
*tj*vir [ʧ-] en [-kʲ-] en
*ng *vir [Å]. Die nommer van letters is om hierdie rede 'n bietjie kleiner
as die nommer van foneme. Aan die ander kant lyk *ê* vir [É:] en *û* vir [Å:]
(wat diakritiese simbole het) om foneme te verteenwoordig.
