Hello Group, my name is William Paterson and I live just outside of
Philadelphia. I have been following the list for a while, but I have not
spoken up until now, though I have very much enjoyed following the group's
discussions.
The reason I'm piping up now is that I have a question: Is it a horrible
idea to try to learn Old English and Old Norse more or less concurrently?
I have been studying OE independently for about 8 months (I also read Middle
English and Scots, Early through Modern), and I feel I do well with OE
prose, though poetry is still difficult. At this point, I am wondering if
beginning to study ON, while continuing with OE, might:
1. Not interfere with learning OE, and, better;
2. Actually shed some additional light on OE (and ME, and Scots).
It seems to me that because of the similarity between OE and ON, and the
fact that I will not need to speak them, maybe this is a workable plan. On
the other hand, it could be an awful idea - I just don't know.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks for coming out of the shadows of lurkdom, Bill. It’s great to meet
you.
You and I briefly corresponded about this topic privately, but at this point
I will not tell what I said. I don’t want to influence others, and I know we
have quite a few members that I am sure have a lot more to offer on this
than I do.
Good luck with your studies, and don’t be a stranger!
