The first time I went to the Netherlands I got talking about language,
especially Afrikaans (I lived in SA back then). I commented that Afrikaans
had "baie" rather than "veel", and they said that Dutch people would still
know what I meant. I didn't know about the Malay origin at the time so I
thought it was a Dutch dialect word; has it crept in to Hollands then?

This time I like to complicate things a baie lot.

Dutch has the word: beu [say: /bø/].

The origin of this word [the meaning is circling around: plenty] has never
been explained in whatever direction.

I remember that in older dutch the word is to be found in the written form:
boie.

Well, isn't this a beautiful puzzle for our lowlands-friends?
I guess that our experts of zeeuws and vlaams might digg in their historical
archives and come up with something useful.
For now I just drop this pebble in the lowlands-pond.
