Flemish kid gives his name to the first European Gallileo satellite.

Thijs (also written Thys incidentally, especially in the walloon part of
Belgium) is very common as Christian name in the Netherlands. In the
North-East of Belgium it is also occuring frequently as Surname (Family
name).
Thijs is an abbreviation of Mathijs (In the US: Mathis, Matthew).

The ij is pronounced differtently:
In Belgium & the Netherlands: e+i (e of bell)
In the UK/USA: a+i (a of ball)
In Wallonia & France: ii (i of give)
In Germany as ü

In old Dutch orthography it was often spelled “y”. Later it became ij.
This has been leading to some oddities:
In some dictionaries (Winkler Prins, Elsevier) Y and IJ were mixed all under
Y
In most dictonaries nowadays IJ and Y are separated, IJ being listed under I
as I + J

IJ (for some words spelled as ei) and Y are pronounced differently in Dutch:
ijs, eiland, IJmuiden, Eisden as e+i (e of bell, i of give)
xylofoon, hypnose, hymne as i of give (for foreign words the foreign
pronounciation is often kept, as e.g. “yale sleutel” for “yale key”)

IJ is also treated differently from other diphtongs spellingwise as capital
at the beginning of words.
For the diphtongs OU, AU, EI, UI only the first of the combination is
written in capital:
Eisden, Oudenaarde, Uikhoven, Australië
While for IJ both characters are written in capital: IJsland, IJzer

11-jarige Thijs geeft naam aan Europese satelliet

29/06 Thijs, dat is de naam van de eerste van 27 Galileo-satellieten die de
Europese Unie op 20 oktober de ruimte inschiet. Het ding is genoemd naar...
een 11-jarige jongen uit Balegem.
"Ik heb een satelliet naar mij vernoemd, en jij?" Het zouden de woorden
kunnen zijn van de 11-jarige Thijs Paelman uit Balegem (Oosterzele). De
jongeman won een tekenwedstrijd uitgevaardigd door de Europese Unie, en
kreeg prompt een Galileo-satelliet naar hem vernoemd. "Een hele eer", lacht
Thijs. "Het voelt nu een heel klein beetje alsof ik zelf rond de aarde
zweef."
De jongen werd in het Mechelse Technopolis gehuldigd door wat hoge piefen
van de Europese Commissie, federaal minister van wetenschapsbeleid Sabine
Laruelle en astronaut Dirk Frimout. "Die Galileo-satellieten worden de
Europese tegenhanger van het Amerikaanse gps-systeem", legt Frimout, één van
de juryleden van de tekenwedstrijd, uit. In totaal zullen er de komende
jaren 27 satellieten gelanceerd worden. Omdat er toevallig evenveel
lidstaten zijn, kwam de EU voor de naamgeving met een origineel idee op de
proppen: een tekenwedstrijd in elk Europees land.
