About the Launch:

Wonnarua Elders Council Elder Uncle Richard Edwards will officially launch
the Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide written by Wonnarua Elder Sharon-Edgar Jones
and Albert Burgman with assistance from Jim Wafer. This project has been
administered by Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative with
funding from the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts
program through the Department of Communications and the Arts Support
Program and the NSW Government through Aboriginal Affairs NSW.

The Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide has grown out of the community’s efforts to
revive their language, a language of the NSW Hunter River area, and has been
supported in all stages of its development by the Wonnarua Elders Council.
Each year more and more people are relearning the Wanarruwa language.
Language learning courses and books, such as this, are an important part of
a revival of the language that belongs to this land.

The Wanarruwa Beginner’s Guide is a step-by-step guide to understanding
Wanarruwa — beginning with the absolute essentials and steadily building up
knowledge of how the pieces of the language work together. This step-by-step
language learning format lends itself to being used as a basis for sequenced
language teaching, and, indeed, it is hoped that this will be the case. This
guide should form the basis of any Wanarruwa language learning and teaching.
