[forwarded from Michel Antelme]

Dear All (sorry for this mass mailing), Chers tous (le français suit
après et désolé pour ce message collectif)

I was forwarded on the morning of August 14, 2023 this message from from
a young Cambodian student (who had great admiration and sympathy for
Gérard), and it is with great sorrow too that I am informing you, for
those not yet aware, that :

"It is with immense sadness that I announce that our scholar, lok krou
Gérard diffloth, left us this morning (7am Thailand time). I'll never
forget the kind words. I offer my condolences to his family and loved
ones."

Gérard was a staggering specialist in Mon-Khmer languages and historical
phonetics. He had been living in Siemreap for many, many years, but his
wife, Som, had taken him to Surin just over a week ago, both as an
emergency hospitalization for his deteriorating health, and to renew his
expired Cambodian visa, for which he was obliged to leave Cambodia.

For those who knew him and won't be able to attend his funeral and meet
his partner Som (Samruan Wongjaroen), here's a fundraising money pot by
a pool of Gérard's colleagues and friends, if interested (this kitty
will be valid for two weeks). I certify that this link is no fraud.
Please feel free to forward my email to people who know Gérard:

Gérard Diffloth’s immediate surviving family are his daughter, Natalie
Diffloth, his son, Antoine Diffloth, his older sister, Nicole Jondot,
his younger sister, Janine Free, and his wife Som. If you want to send
you condolences, you can do so to Nathalie Diffloth:
ndiffloth at gmail.com, to Janine Free janinefree at gmail.com and to Som
who is using Gérard's address (but doesn't use it frequently)
gdiffloth at gmail.com.
