UC Riverside offers Ling 21 "Grammar". This was devised when it became
clear that many students came to the university knowing literally nothing
about grammar. I, who came up with the course (though have never taught
it) described it as "teaching all the stuff that used to be taught in high
school", e.g., nouns, adjectives (many students in Language 1 courses don't
know the difference!), parsing sentences, etc. We specifically do NOT
require this of Ling majors or Languages majors, who have to take Intro
Linguistics instead. Enrollment wise, the course is quite successful.
