a question about Dostoevsky and prisons

Hi Hugh,

I'm almost positive that I found that phrase from Dostoevsky in the Diary of a Writer. I was working on a grad essay on Foucault and Dostoevsky--Foucault cites the phrase in the preface to the first French edition of Madness and Civilization (but not subsequent editions). If I remember correctly, the quote appears near the beginning of a story or essay on a subject otherwise completely unrelated to prisons.

Hope this doesn't lead to another fruitless search! It was years ago, and I don't even have a copy of the grad paper anymore.
