SignWriting List
October 14, 2013

Thank you, Gerard, for all of your support …

Steve is planning to move all the files from the ASL Wikipedia on Wikimedia Labs over to the Incubator just as soon as he can breathe from the overwork he is experiencing right now… So we will definitely have an Incubator version of the ASL Wikipedia in the future, but we are just not there right now…

Since we do not have the software ready at this moment, for classrooms of deaf students to be able to edit directly into the Wikipedia, while we are waiting for that software to be completed, Nancy, Adam and others are working on articles. I am grateful to have the articles we do have, because they are already useful for Deaf and ASL students. I have been printing them and using them that way, and people do visit the articles on Wikimedia Labs.

But I can envision classrooms of Deaf students writing articles in ASL in the future - for sure!

There are people coming from several countries to our SignWriting Symposium 2014, specifically because they want to develop a Wikipedia in the sign languages of their countries…

Val ;-)

However, the fact of having people on a committee is also very much that we can bend the rules when there are good arguments for it.

Consider a class with 20 students, writing one article a week... How many Wikipedias could we have as a result ??

Test projects are typically set up as Wikimedia Incubator projects (for ASL, that would be https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/ase/M529x544S2ff00482x483S20500519x504S18517503x517 ). Has the LangCom said anything about the acceptability of a non-Incubator-based test project?

Thanks to Steve Slevinski's gadget, page titles can be written in ASL on the Incubator (if I understand correctly, this can't be done on the labs site), ASL links are colored like normal text links, and no special signtext tags are necessary.
