[Sw-l] Another HoopWriting attempt...

Hi Valerie and rest of the list!

Thanks for your kind reply, Valerie.

I totally agree with the two points you mention for writing systems. I
think standardization is important for readability. Sometimes when the
system expands, changes/additions are necessary, but only when there is a
good reason for it. That is why I wanted to check about the feet. I am not
an expert on all kinds of movements/sports, but the very reason that I came
up with the idea for HoopWriting is that it has a lot of similarities with
sign language, more so than other types of movement I think. Especially for
the following reasons:

   - it uses specific handshapes to do the tricks and also the direction
your palm faces is very important. If you use the wrong handshape or hold
your hand in the wrong direction, the trick won't work. For example, there
is a transition from one move to another where you circle the hoop once
around your thumb and then around four fingers on a flat hand.
   - tricks happen on specific planes (horizontal and vertical (front,
sides, and back) or move between those planes
   - with hoop dance people generally don't move around the space a lot
(compared to say ballet or football). People mainly stay in one place,
facing forwards, or sometimes turn around. Of course, people can combine
hoop dance with other kinds of dance, so in that case, they might move
around through the space more but in basic hoop dance not so much. However,
legs are important in hoop dance: to spin the hoops around your legs for
example, or kicking the hoop up. In those cases, the position of the legs
and the feet is important, because otherwise, just like with hand
positions, the trick might not work. So in hoop dance legs and feet are
used more like a tool, similar to arms and hands, to do tricks and less to
move around the space like with ballet dance or lots of sports. This is why
it feels more natural for me to write the feet in a SignWriting style.

You mention creating a space on the internet for HoopWriting. If you like
it I could create a WordPress site where I post any future HoopWriting I do
(and of course, you can link to it from the SignWriting/MovementWriting
site)?
And because it is WordPress, if in the future there are more people
interested in writing HoopWriting, I can give them admin rights to the site
so they can post their own.

And I think just calling it HoopWriting would be enough 😅, or if it had
any name attached to it it would be Sutton of course!

Have a nice day and kind regards,
Suzanne
