"Bedehuis" I have never seen in Dutch, although it is a valid compound I
think as we have "bedevaart" with bede- as first element, meaning
pilgrimage.

Beste Diederik,

...
"21)    in Mijn bedehuis;

Diederik,

I'm not sure what the borrowing situation is (or which way it might've
been), but Norwegian (and other Scandinavians?) has "bedehus" meaning I
think the same thing.

Subject: Etymology

Lucas,

I'm pretty sure that Norwegian *bedehus* goes back to Middle Saxon
*bedehūs*via massive Saxon influx during the era of the Saxon-speaking
Hanseatic
Trading League. Actually, it could even go back to Old Saxon
*bedehūs*("praying house"), since Christianization of Scandinavia,
though regulated
by the Franks, emanated from what is now Northern Germany. Hamburg was
primarily established as a trading post and missionary headquarters for
Scandinavia and to a lesser degree to the Polabian Slavs (who where
geographically the closest to Hamburg at the time). In turn, "Vikings" and
Slavs frequently attacked and sacked Hamburg. The beginning of these
missions preceded the establishment of the Hanseatic Trading League.

Norwegian may have received *bedehus* directly from Saxon or via Danish,
which has *bedehus* as well. (It seems to mean 'chapel' rather than actually
'church'.)

If Old Norse had a cognate word I would expect **bœn(i)hūs*. In Icelandic I
would expect **bænhús* or **biðjahús*, in Faroese **bønhús* or **biðjahús*.
I can't verify the existence of any of them. Swedish, however, does have
expected *bönhus*, which may or may not be a Saxon calque (i.e. loan
translation). Finnish has *rukoushuone *("prayer room") which may or may not
be a Swedish or Saxon calque.
