From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at yahoo.com>
Subject: Etymology

I asked about one of the names for the Estonian bagpipes:

*Kotepill* I am not sure about, but I wonder if *kote* is related to
'cottage', 'homestead', which in Modern Estonian is *kodu*, besides borrowed
*kotedž* (cf. Finnish *koti*, Veps *kodi*). If there is such a link, this is
one of my favorite etyma with possible Eurasian spread (*"permanent
building/settlement" > "city", cf. "hut", cottage, *kota*).

Could it be possible that *kote...*is an older reference to "Scot(land)" (<
**skote...*)?

By this I mean something older than the currently used, probably
German-derived *Å¡oti* and *Å¡otlane* 'Scot', 'Scottish' (perhaps borrowed via
Russian, *шотландец, шотландский* etc.).

Minu südamliku tervitused kõigile,
