If you write a scientific paper, it is because you have ideas you want to
present. If you write it in Afrikaans, you might reach a few thousand
readers in your field at most, probably a lot less.

When I lived in SA there was a tendency for Rand Afrikaans and Pretoria
Universities in particular to present the occasional paper in Afrikaans at
conferences, but it was recognised that it was more or less a political
requirement. The delegates who had come from Britain, or France, or the USA,
or anywhere else in the world, tip-toed out for a coffee if they were close
enough to the exit. Many of these papers had something useful to say - but
not, apparently, to the 99.99% of the scientific community who happen not to
understand Afrikaans.

There are any number of ways to preserve your language; scientific
literature surely isn't one of them, unless you specifically *don't* want to
be reviewed or cited by the communitiy at large.

The vast majority of people who read and write English, aren't English, by a
ratio of at least 10:1 by my reckoning. When it comes to Germanic languages
losing their roots, the language of the English suffers as much from this
"globalisation" as any other - it's been effectively hi-jacked by the rest
of the world, who seem hell-bent on turning it into pidgin Graeco-Latin.

Paul.

Heel bedroevend wat ik daar lees, At.

English could be the saviour of all the

other languages of the world, if it

would become a lingua franca in the

the form of a SECOND language for

everybody, giving the first languages,

big or small, the needed breathing

space. As you point out, At, the

opposite is happening.

What is needed is the corresponding

legal framework, helaas absent but in

a handful of states, none though w.r.t.

English.

Sadly, Mike Wintzer

Haai almal,

sekere rasse.

Groete,

Elsie Zinsser
