  Subject: LL-L 'Etymology'

Beste Denis,

In dutch " een goeie lobbes" means "a good and friendly bloke". Always
wondered which linguistic reference this one had.

Well, right off the top of my head, "lob" is the core of this word,
denoting something heavy, bungling down. Suffix -es can be compared with
dreum-es, a northern way to make a noun. Up here we say "ne löbben" (same
meaning).

And! I believe English "lubber" (as in landlubber) is the same word.

Apparently German "lorbas" also interferes with "lo(r)be(e)r", (~ laurel
berry, cf. Western German dialect dictionaries). Was therefore initally
guessing that a final -s for berry (like Dutch bes, bees) may also have
been possible in some Saxon varieties...but now thinking I will have to
denounce that train of thought.

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx, Halle, Belgium
