Als ik mij goed herinner, komt het Nederlands "kalkoen" < "kalkoets hoen" =
hoen uit Calcutta (in India). 'k Zit nu zelf in Turkije en zie hier in
ieder geval niet bijzonder veel kalkoenen lopen ;=)

Vandaar ook het Oostends voor "mais": tusjhetérwe, en dat betekent
eigenlijk: Turkse tarwe.


Bij ons "Spojnse terref" = Spaanse tarwe (voor maïs).

'k Denk dat zowel Turken als Spanjaarden bij ons vroeger goed bekend waren
als doorgeefluik voor goederen die origineel van veel verder weg kwamen.

The Hebrew name for the bird we call "turkey" is תרנגול הודו (*tarnegol hodu
* "India fowl"), and in Arabic it's دجاج رومي (*dajaj rūmī* "Roman fowl,"
"Rome" originally being the name of the Byzantine Empire, today's Turkey).

Interestingly, in Pennsylvania German the name is *Welschhinkel*
("Welsh/Romance
chicken").

I am particularly fond of the Scots name: *bubbly-jock*.
