I remember when I was a child in Southern Ontario many, many years ago that we
were told quite seriously that the Indians on the west coast were called
"Siwash" just like the ones on the prairies were Crees or Blackfeet. It wasn't
derogatory at all. I think it came from people who had visited out here , had
heard the local Indians called "Siwash" and assumed it was their name.
