Laos School Volunteering

Colleagues,

I’m writing about a linguistics-related research/volunteering opportunity. I know most people’s research plates are full, but it’s possible you know someone who would be interested in this, perhaps at a graduate or undergraduate level.

A friend of mine recently did a short-term stint as a primary school-level volunteer English teacher in rural Laos. Although the program was affiliated with a non-profit, there was apparently no curriculum when she arrived. She consulted with the parent organization, and they concluded that the ideal would be for a linguist with some expertise in language acquisition to step in and help design a curriculum specific to their needs. It sounds like they don’t have the money to pay anyone to do this, so they are hoping that someone will be interested in taking this on as a research project of some kind. The organization apparently has contacts throughout the region and would be willing to support the collection of linguistic data.

If this entices you, you can find details and contact info in the attached document. I’m not otherwise familiar with the organization, but I’m happy to ask my friend for more info and to facilitate contact in whatever way I can.
